R.M.S. Titanic The Ship By Bill Hadler The R.M.S Titanic. In 1912, it was the worlds biggest ship. It was a great loss to the world when it sank not only because of the loss of life but the loss of ship too. She was very pretty as well as very huge. Lots of time was spent into this great piece of work and I would now like to tell you about some of the interesting things about this ship. The ship itself was 882 feet in length and 92.5 feet in width. It was as big as four Statues of Liberty and was almost as big as a aircraft carrier today. This massive ship weighed 46,328 tons and the hull weighed 26,000 tons. The rudder itself weighed 20,250 tons. This means you would need a anchor of 15.5 tons to stop this massive ship. The anchor was so big they needed 20 horses to move it. Because this ship was so very big, it would need a big enigens to move. There were two reciprocating four cylinder, triple expansion, direct-acting, inverted engines. These engines had 30,000 horsepower that ran at 77 RPM and the ship also had one low pressure Parsons turbine that had 16,000 horsepower and went at 165 RPM. The 4 tunnels at the bottom of the ship were so big that 2 trains could fit inside it. The engines were so powerful that they moved the three huge propellers that 2 were 17 feet and the other one was 23.5 ft long. These engines required boilers that prduced heat by coal. There were 29 of these boilers that helped with the ship. There were also 159 furnaces that helped provided the total heating surface of 144,142 square feet. These big engines helped the titanic made it possible to go 23 knots. There were 3,547 passengers and crew on the ship. What would they live in. To start out, the Titanic had three different types of rooms. The first type was first class. This is what everyone wanted. It like being a 5-star hotel. These rooms were very, very expensive to live in. Today it would cost $50,000 to stay in a first class parlor suite(only two of these) and $1,724 to stay in a berth (57 of these). You lived like the rich and famous. Next was second class. This was what most people had. These were your basic hotel rooms. They were pretty good overall. A second class room on the Titanic cost $1724 today. Now the third type of room was third class. This was less than basic. It contained only a bed and a bathroom in it. All this was was a place to sleep and not even lounge around. It was, in other words, ?boring?. The Titanic had many different things to do in it. First off it was the first ocean liner to have a gym and a heated swimming pool in it. This big boat also had a squash court, a Turkish bath, two smoking rooms (for the men only) and reading and writing rooms for the ladies, two libraries, and very big restaurants with real palm trees in them along with French waiters. The Titanic was very great ship. Too bad it is not around anymore. This great ship was loved by all and its a shame how they have not made a recplia of this great, massive ship.

The Bee Essay THE BEE ESSAY The worker bees live a very short life. Their average life span is about six weeks. The worker bees are the sterile females of the bee population. They feed honey and pollen to the queen of the hive. The worker bees are called nurse bees when they enter into this stage. They produce a jelly called royal jelly which is high in protein. They give this royal jelly to the queen bee and she feeds it to her young ones. Then worker bees start to produce a honeycomb from the wax that they secrete. During this stage they can also fan their wings to circulate fresh air. The house bee is a young worker be about 2 weeks old bee who only works in the hive. The queen bee is the head honcho of the whole hive. The queen really doesn't do much. She sits in the hive and has the babies. The queen secretes a substance called queen factor which keeps all of the other female bees from becoming sexually mature. The queen is fed royal jelly to further her development as she becomes a grown bee. The queen's number one priority is to reproduce. Once she successfully does that, her job is pretty much done with. The queen is very special because she can do all of her mating in the air. The queen only mates once in her life, but in that one mating session she can produce as many as a million eggs a year. When the queen feels that the hive is getting crowded, she ventures off into the wilderness with a few of her worker bees to search for a new beginning (a new hive). Then, when the queen dies another queen will take her place and start the whole thing all over again. The drones are also placed on this earth for one main reason. That reason is to satisfy the queen. Drones are unfertilized eggs whose jobs consist of supplying the queen bee with the sperm when she is ready. Then the drones are either eaten by the queen or stung by the workers and evicted from their home. They live a very tragic life. The drone's structure is also kind of odd because the drone does not possess a stinger. So, they cannot really protect themselves when they need to. The queen bee releases a substance called queen factor which is a pheromone. When she releases this substance, the other bee's behavior is affected. They act as if they were under the influence. They really are because the queen factor acts as a drug in that it affects the way that their body functions. The queen also causes the bees to march in a line as if they were in a marching band. What they are doing is following the queen factor. Bees communicate by special dances that they perform for special occasions. This may seem kind of odd, but this is actually true. German biologist Karl von Frisch first discovered these special dances after 25 years of hard research. The bees do the dance according to their food source and it's position. They also involve the sun in their communicative dances. The scout would go out and find some food and then return and do a dance like motion. He would circle once to the left and then once to the right, and that is where we got the name of the round dance. Another dance was also discovered. This dance was called the waggle dance. The bee would go in a straight forward motion and waggle their little abdomens. Later, we discovered that the round dance was a dance done for food sources closest to the hive, but the waggle dance was performed for food sources closest to the sun.. Camille Pissaro essays Camille Pissarro's painting style changed from one period of his career to another. Throughout his career his approach to his art stayed the same. He did his art work in a way that not only reflected what he saw but also who he was. Pissarro thought of light as "inseparable" from an object. With Pissarro's use of light it was easy to reach beyond what is seen and into emotion. Pissarro was born July 10th, 1830 on the Caribbean Island of St. Thomas. He went to a small boarding school in Paris at the age of 12. His director at this school told Pissaro to take advantage of his life in the tropics and draw what was around him. Pissarro lost interest in artists that were known as "masters", he was drawn more towards artist who did not conform to accepted styles. Pissarro strongly believed in free thoughts and speech. To Pissarro impressionism was a movement that allowed artistic freedom for artist. He was the one of the only impressionist artist to go to all the exhibitions. It was restrictive judges that influenced Pissarro and many other impressionists to form the "Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers." Though Pissarro could only sell a few of his paintings in his life times, today they go up for sale at about $4 million. Pissarro was one of the first painters to use science of color in art. The work of Camille Pissarro was a big part of influencing 19th century art, yet he is not one of the more wide known artists of his time. The painting "Red Roofs." shows some of the bare essentials of impressionism; the beautiful colors, the quick brush strokes, the wonderful nature scene.
